Viniyoga
Viniyoga style focuses on the direction of movement of the spine, the relationship between breath and movement, and the function and adaptability of yoga poses. Students will have the opportunity to explore yoga asana (poses), pranayama (breathwork), energetic awareness, bandhas (energy locks), chanting, meditation, ritual, and the study of the Yoga Sutras and other ancient yogic texts. This class incorporates both repetition and stay patterns within postures, along with short flowing sequences.
Each class begins with a specific intention designed to support the movement of energy throughout the practice and provide students with an opportunity to "drop in" and explore the many dimensions of their being. The intention also encourages reflection on how the teachings of yoga can be integrated into everyday life, bridging this ancient practice with the realities of modern living.
Viniyoga honors the authentic transmission of teachings as received from T. K. V. Desikachar and T. Krishnamacharya. Classes may include chanting seed or expanded mantras, exploring the chakras (cakras), reflecting on passages from the Yoga Sutras, or incorporating hand mudras to support the flow of energy alongside the asana practice.
